Anthony Gerard Montag MD passed away November 9, 2018 in Chicago, Illinois surrounded by his loving family. Born in Woodbine, Iowa on August 21, 1954 to Maurice, a large-animal veterinarian, and Gretchan Montag, Tony began his education in a one-room schoolhouse. He graduated from Iowa State University where he was Graduating Scholar and received his medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin. He completed training in Pathology at the Medical College of Wisconsin and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, where he was a clinical fellow at Harvard Medical School. Tony joined the University of Chicago faculty in 1985 and rose to Professor of Pathology and Associate Dean for Admission at the Pritzker School of Medicine. Known for his commitment to his students, Tony was voted favorite faculty multiple times, received an AOA teaching award, and was recognized as a clinical peer mentor and a Fellow of the Academy of Distinguished Medical Educators at Pritzker. His contributions to his community included his work as assistant scoutmaster for Troop 512 and Chair of Property and Finance at Hyde Park Union Church. In his free time, Tony could be found cycling around Chicago. Tony is survived by his beloved wife, Katherine Leslie Griem MD, three children, Hugh (Natasha), William and Caroline, four siblings, five nieces and nephews and their children. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and colleagues.
